Passionate, Responsible E-Bike Riders Promoting Fair Access

E-Bike Access is a non-profit, public benefit corporation advocating for safe, legal, and equal access to pedal-assist e-bikes.

We are a diverse group of artists, business professionals, environmentalists, lawyers — all passionate e-mountain bikers united by a shared love for nature and cycling.

Decades ago, our founders helped blaze the way for legal access for bicycles on Mt. Tamalpais, the backyard mountain where mountain biking was born.

As we have aged or faced other physical challenges, we graduated to pedal-assist e-bikes to continue our connection with nature and extend our cycling careers.

Three members served on Marin Water’s Citizens Advisory Committee on E-bikes in 2019/2020.  We advocate and collaborate with elected officials at state and local levels; cycling organizations including Marin County Bicycle Coalition, CalBikes, Danville Safety Advocates, Access4Bikes, Streets for People, and People For Bikes; civic organizations like TamOne, Transportation Authority of Marin and Safe Routes for Schools.  And we serve as e-bike consultant to the San Mateo County Office of Education.

Our work has been featured and cited in the New York Times Sunday Magazine, the Mineta Transportation Institute study on e-bike safety, CBS News, NPR, S.F. Chronicle, Streetsblog, Bicycle Retailer, and other media outlets.

We focus on two projects:

  • expanding areas where legal pedal-assist e-bikes are allowed, and

  • curbing the proliferation of illegal e-motos that are dangerous and cause “bike lash” against legal e-bikes.

Explore those projects here and here.

We stand for equal treatment for all riders, regardless of age, physical condition, or disabilities. With a deep respect for nature and the communities where we ride, we promote responsible e-bike use to ensure access for future generations.
