Marin Open Space Project Status: Staff Proposes E-bike Access
Four different agencies control various parts of Mt. Tam. Most riders cannot tell when they are crossing from one jurisdiction to the next.
At three out of the four (Marin Water, Mt. Tam State Park and GGNRA), e-mountain bikes are officially allowed almost everywhere regular bicycles are allowed.
Ironically, Marin County which prides itself on being e-bike-friendly is the only agency that has not yet modernized its rules. Unofficially, e-mountain bikes are as prevalent on Marin County Open Space lands as elsewhere on Mt. Tam. At our urging, Marin County is now considering officially allowing e-mountain bikes.
The Parks and Open Space Commission will consider the staff proposal to allow Class 1 e-mountain bikes at its meeting on September 17, 2026.
Here is a Parks and Open Space survey to be completed by September 1.
More information is available on the Commission’s website.
