MCBC rally for Safer Freitas Parkway - On Saturday, June 28, our community lost a beloved member—Chris Brignetti, coach of the Terra Linda High School mountain bike team, a devoted father, mentor, and passionate cyclist.
Chris was killed while riding through the intersection of Freitas Parkway and Lea Drive - a site where at least five other bicyclists have been seriously injured in nearly identical crashes. Despite identifying a need for improvements on Freitas in its own 2018 Bicycle Master Plan, the City of San Rafael made no significant safety improvements, even after we urged them to do so during a 2023 repaving project.
We cannot let this happen again.
Join us at a rally for a Safer Freitas Parkway.
Please join us in calling for action to keep a tragedy like this from occurring again.
When: Monday, July 21st at 5:45 PM
Where: Front steps of San Rafael City Hall Council Chambers, 1400 Fifth Ave (at the intersection of 5th Ave and D St).
We will be honoring Chris’s life and speaking to the need for safer streets in San Rafael by rallying before the July 21st City Council meeting.
At 6 PM, we will walk to Tam Commons to discuss next steps. For those seeking to give a public comment to the city council, you may only do so in person. Public comments are held at the end of the council’s agenda, which will likely be sometime around 8 PM. You can watch on YouTube to track the meeting’s progress.
You may also send your public comment via email using the following link: Email the City Council.
Giving Public Comment
Community members will be given 3 minutes to speak at the end of the meeting. Please keep your comments respectful, express your urgency, and focus on solutions. Learn more here.
Here are some talking points you can use:
If you live in San Rafael, mention it.
Six crashes at the same intersection are six too many.
The City chose not to implement its own 2018 Bicycle Master Plan recommendations, which would have narrowed the travel lanes.
Freitas Parkway’s wide, high-speed design is inherently unsafe.
It's time to redesign this road and others like it in San Rafael before more lives are lost.
Safer roads encourage more walking and biking, reducing car traffic and contributing to the city's climate goals.
Email your public comment before 4 PM on Monday, July 21st.

June 27, 9:30am
MMWD Finance Committee Meeting—As the flip-side of the e-bike and single-track trial programs under development, the Marin Water staff will present proposals for enhanced enforcement and fines for illegal riding. It’s a carrot-and-stick approach: “if you want more bicycle access, you need to stop riding illegally”.
August 2024
Staff will present further details on e-bike and single-track programs, presumably including a proposed selection for trails from the 14 listed at the June 20 board meeting.
